Title: Testing What Type of Scuba Air Will Result in the Slowest Heart Rate and Highest Oxygen Saturation in our Blood


Problem Statement: Which Type of Scuba Tank Will Result in the Slowest Heart Rate and the Highest Oxygen Saturation in our Blood?


Hypothesis: Breathing air from a nitrox scuba tank will result in the slowest heart rate and highest oxygen saturation.























Method and Materials:


Materials:


Scuba gear(BCD, air tank(regular and nitrox, regulator, fins)

Stopwatch

Pulse oximeter

Computer

Paper

Pencils


Method:


On Land

1) Take timer and time Michael doing a physical activity for 5 minutes (either stationary, walk, run)

2) After 5 minutes has elapsed, end activity and immediately place Michael's/JP's finger in pulse oximeter to see the heart rate and oxygen saturation.(Make sure to do 2 trials)

3) Record results.

4) Repeat Steps 1-3 but this time have JP do the same physical activity.

5) Record results.

6) Repeat Steps 1 through 5 twice more but choose different physical activities, recording results


Under Water/On Scuba

1) Take timer and time Michael doing a physical activity for 5 minutes (stationary, relaxed swim swim, intense swim).

2) After 5 minutes has elapsed end activity. Immediately take pulse oximeter and place Michael's/JP's finger inside to see heart rate and oxygen saturation.(Make sure to do 2 trials)

3) Record the results.

4) Repeat Steps 1 and 2 but this time have JP doing the same physical activity.

5) Repeat Steps 1 through 4 twice more but choose a different physical each time.

6) Repeat Steps 1-5, but this time scuba dive with nitrox

7) After all of the data has been collected, enter into computer to generate a results table.



Results:

-There are two tables here, the first one is all of the data we collected, the second is a nice, neat table of all of the same results averaged.

Conclusion:


Further research is needed to determine whether nitrox affects heart rate and oxygen saturation in the human blood.
