This is an animation of our experiment in action.

The diagram below portrays what happens to the lungs, when one has an air embolism. At great depths the regulator must give the lungs air at very high pressures. When a diver breathes from the regulator under great depths, and holds his breath as he rises to the top, air expands in his lungs. This will often cause an air embolism, which is when the lungs burst. This shows the size of the lungs as the diver surfaces while holding his breath. In the final picture of the diagram, the lung finally ruptures.
