Orienteering is a very significant process while navigating underwater especially in the ocean. It provides a safe route when traveling to and from the boat (starting point). Many times scuba divers have to surface to identify their location. However, when using certain measurements and angles, a diver does not have to search every few minutes above water for their boat. Orienteering underwater requires measurements to be taken, yet divers find this to be an irritating process. This signifies that rather than taking accurate measurements with a meter stick, divers can use other objects to mark their location. For example. an appealing coral reef may mark one point, and an underwater cave may mark another. As we experienced, orienteering is a much simpler process when being demonstrated on land. Taking measurements for one thing was easier in that the pool current was not creating our markers to move around. We also could get more accurate angles when experimenting on land. We found that the time we did tempt to experiment underwater, even the control was a little off due to the difficulty of measuring the accurate angles on a protractor. Orienteering is a very precise process that needs to be taken quite seriously. While analyzing our results, we noticed that even the addition of a few feet to each side of the course, did not lead us to our original starting point. We only added four feet to each side and even this small alteration did not lead us to the starting point. Therefore, much attention needs to be devoted while navigating underwater especially when one desires to expand and alter their course. Although a safe underwater journey requires much attention and hard work, you will not have to face the consequences of looking for your original starting point.
